Skincare & Cosmetics Export FAQs

Common questions about exporting cosmetics to China.

What is China’s CSAR regulation?
CSAR (Cosmetic Supervision and Administration Regulation) is China’s core cosmetics law effective since 2021. It governs filing, registration, ingredients and safety assessment for imported cosmetics – including US and UK skincare brands.
Do I need animal testing for cosmetics in China?
Since 2021, animal testing is no longer mandatory for most imported cosmetics when sufficient safety data is provided. Special rules still apply to certain product categories.
How long does NMPA filing take?
Filing for ordinary cosmetics typically takes 1-3 months; registration for special-use products (e.g., sunscreen) takes 3-6 months. Complete, accurate submission speeds up the process.
What labeling is required for imported cosmetics?
Imported cosmetics need Chinese labels with product name, ingredients, warnings and the NMPA registration number. We create compliant label layouts for you.
Can I sell cosmetics through cross-border e-commerce?
Yes. The cross-border channel lets you sell cosmetics without NMPA approval directly to Chinese consumers – a fast option for market testing, though not a replacement for a long-term approval strategy.
Is trademark registration necessary for cosmetics brands?
Yes, strongly recommended. Cosmetic brand squatting is widespread in China. Register your trademark with CNIPA before entering the market.
